Briarpatch is an award-winning magazine of politics and culture. Fiercely independent and proudly polemical, it offers original reporting, insight, and analysis from a grassroots perspective by prominent and upcoming writers.

As a reader-supported publication, Briarpatch is not just devoted to reporting on social movements — it’s committed to building them.

Since 1973, Briarpatch has been publishing committed journalism and critical commentary from its home in Treaty 4 territory (the lands of Cree, Saulteaux, Dakota, Nakota, and Lakota people, and the homeland of the Métis Nation). The place we are headquartered is colonially known as Regina, Saskatchewan.

Beholden only to its readers, Briarpatch defies the false consensus of the corporate media, striving instead to be a fiercely independent voice.

“Briarpatch turns everyday news into insightful analysis, replacing noise with actionable politics.”
 — Ricardo Tranjan, author of The Tenant Class

“As an independent media organization, Briarpatch Magazine is an important platform because it amplifies diverse voices and foregrounds suppressed narratives, countering censorship or political and corporate pressure [...] The world needs more independent media that upholds the ethics of journalism and factual reporting, especially during the ongoing atrocities in Palestine and the Western imperial wars for oil in the Middle East.” — Rehab Nazzal

“At a time when we are inundated with quick takes and fast content production, Briarpatch is one of the most reliable and grounded progressive movement publications. With a keen ear to the ground, Briarpatch is one of my favourite resources to truly understand what's happening, how to make sense of these times, and how to support the many frontlines across these lands- from migrant justice and BDS campaigns, to disability justice and land back struggles, to abolitionist and tenant formations.” — Harsha Walia, author of Border and Rule

"Briarpatch is an indispensable resource for liberatory social movements in trying times." — Mike Gouldhawke

Briarpatch is published quarterly by Briarpatch Incorporated, an independent non-profit organization overseen by a volunteer Board of Directors. Briarpatch is a member of the Canadian Magazine Publishers Association and the staff are members of SJB-RWDSU Local 568.

Briarpatch is printed by union labour on Forest Stewardship Council-certified paper using vegetable-based ink.
